Kansas City's airport was built in 1972, and as the city has grown, it hasn’t kept up. Mayor Sly James knew an improved airport would create the opportunity for more flights in and out of KC, better service and thousands of new jobs for Kansas City residents. But at the outset of campaign, the mayor faced a serious challenge. Voters were reluctant, concerned the new terminal would mean giving up the ease and convenience they’ve grown to love, and polling showed support under 50 percent.

The seasoned campaign team worked with the Mayor to help residents understand the benefits of the Better KCI plan. HGCreative produced three television and four radio ads, (several featuring the popular mayor) underscoring how the plan would modernize the airport while maintaining the convenience residents loved. And, the project would bring new jobs and economic development opportunities to the city, without tax dollars.

On election day, Kansas City’s voters took a decisive and historic step by overwhelmingly approving the plan with 75 percent in favor. We are proud to have helped Mayor James in this decisive win, and can't wait to take a flight to the new KCI in 2021!
